The Decision to Get Hair Extensions

I Was Tired of Bad Hair Days!

I was tired of not being able to go out in the wind, let alone if it was sprinkling here in the Northwest. I was really tired of spending 30 minutes on my hair – every day – and still not being happy.

Yikes – Before.  July 2008, my 50th birthday (hence the glassy eyes). This hair style required me to dry my baby fine hair upside down immediately after washing. Then a round brush and a hair dryer while spraying with Shaper Plus… back comb the crown a little, more spray, hope the wind doesn’t blow and no one touches it.  And ‘maybe’ it would look good all day.

……To THIS – In Under Two Hours!

Me, the day of the event!!!  Here’s the progression…  They wash and ‘clarify’ my hair, then blow it as straight as possible.  Lovely don’t you think?!?!
Starting at the base, they attached the strands of hair with a heat clamp.  Then twist it a bit with their fingers and finish with a cold pliers-type device.
The gals work two at a time to really speed things up.
Here’s a close up of one of the clamps.

They chose the colors carefully to match my existing highlights.

Of course, no one ‘finishes’ my hair like I do – so this looks awkward to me, but they did do a great job!

This photo is why I went back TWO additional times. Had my hair been longer and perhaps a little layered, the initial application would have been sufficient, but being able to see through the hair made me VERY self conscious – as you could imagine.  The gals were great and completely understood.  In fact, before we began they said I may not be able to get the length I wanted from the amount of strands I chose.

IMPORTANT!!! When applying the strands, they are actually cut in half at the tips – so one strand becomes 2.  When I was told I was getting ‘120 strands’ it was actually 60, split.  This is important when you’re pricing your service.  By the time I was finished with 3 applications, I got a total of 140 split strands. And I wouldn’t mind getting another 40-50.

April 9th, 2009.  It only took an hour and a half to wash, attach and style my new locks of hair.  Mermaid Hair Extensions in Kirkland Washington specializes in these. So its no wonder the team of 2 and even sometimes 3 performed like clockwork. The were right on the money when they said that it would be ‘iffy’ if the $750 package I chose would be enough to actually give me length.  It included 120 strands and sure enough – I ordered up another 20 on the spot.  And yesterday I called in for yet another 20-30 because I can see too much of my one length bob through the back.
Keep in mind that I later found out the 120 strands were 60 strands, split.  This is normal. So when researching be sure to ask questions. I’ve since found someone that will do it for about half the price and will write more when I go for a consult.Over all I’m very happy with the service provided, the professional application, the speed in which they worked and the care to make sure I understood just how to keep my hair looking its best the longest.

Owner Cindy suggested I scrunch my hair while letting it dry naturally.  I’ve never done such a thing -unfinished hair- in my life.  Having been a hair dresser in the 70’s with such names as Gene Juarez, I’m all too comfortable with a round brush, hot rollers and a curling iron. And lots of hair spray.  But one morning I thought I’d give it a go. Cindy after all, suggested it more than once.  I applied my favorite AlfaParf mouse, scrunched and went about my morning routine.  Amazing.  No, AMAZING!  I felt the urge to finish the ends with a curling iron but there was really no need.

2nd Week

I’m into my 2nd week of real hair, below my shoulders.  I have to tell you, I’ve never had an easier more feminine hairstyle.  The days of my permed mid back length hair were my favorite.  But they were far too much work.  The service I selected attached real human hair that is slightly curly/waving.  All I do is scrunch it. It still looks best in a low pony or a French braid for now because I’m super self conscious of the underlying bob cut.  I need a bit more.It does tend to tangle more than real hair.  Not just little tangles – its not silky smooth, even though I’ve used the conditioner they gave me at Mermaid Hair Extensions.  It cannot contain oil and I have to keep my hair very clean – therefore the natural scalp oils don’t get a chance to go to the ends.

I feel the chunky sides were corrected sufficiently during my third (yes third) visit during the following week.  It was this photo that confirmed the heaviness of that chunk…  I had them place a few more strands higher as well as fill in more in the back.

Brushing. And brushing and brushing….

My hair was below my waist until mid way through the 2nd grade.  Every morning and every night my mother would brush my hair using a “Fuller Brush” natural bristle pain inducing, scalp scraping methodical motion. Apparently she got tired of hitting me on the head with the darn thing every time I’d say ‘ouch’.  Once cut, I don’t think I’ve brushed it since.  Until now.The gals at Mermaid Hair Extensions made it perfectly clear that I must brush my new hair every morning and every night. And not just brush it… get right down to the scalp, under the layers, and REALLY brush it.  Or the affects of the area from the scalp to the attached extensions could be dread-lock like.

Not really loosing too much.  Certainly not more than I expected.  Only now it hurts knowing that those little darlings aren’t growing back until I pay for them to grow back….

3nd Week

I’m addicted.  I was still self conscious about being able to see the line of my original bob cut and the fact that the center back of my hair would split and show short pieces – so another trip, 20 pieces and $150 later…. I’m happy.  Wish I would have taken photos of Mary & Taylor cutting two pieces out at 1AM…  they were put very low on the nap of my neck and pulled every time I turned my head.  They shaved them off. We could keep the tails and have them reattached.. had Taylor not put them in with the cat litter trash.

4th Week

The tangles were getting to me.  I bought KMS Repair – a product I’ve loved for 25 years – and a cheap silkening-straightening conditioner my son uses.  I use a dab of the cheap stuff on the ends so it doesn’t get onto the glue. Its silky smooth and now that I flat iron it I only wash it every other day.  Easy!!!   :)   Pulling it back to hike, throwing it under a hat, kind of getting used to other people touching it. Because the hair is attached with tiny pieces of keratin glue there are little bumps all over my head…  My man has no problem rubbing his hands over it and even giving it a teasing tug.  He loves it.  Two thumbs up!

Money well spent.  $1050 later I have yet to have a bad hair day. Addicted is an understatement. Not one person has said it doesn’t look like my hair.  The 3 toned colors match my highlights perfectly and take away from any shorter pieces that might show.  Being hot in Seattle is a treat.  Laying in the sun can cause havoc with a hair style.  I threw my hair up on top of my head…  3 days ago… and I’m still not embarrassed to go to the local pub for a little Spanish guitar.  This my friends, is unheard of. Did I mention I’m addicted?

3 Months In

This photo, taken at my son’s June 2009 wedding was almost 3 months to the day after the extensions.  Having been asked to help my daughter-in-law to-be with her hair, the only time I had for myself was a little curling iron action – not even a wash!  Yes, still addicted!

So far I’ve ‘lost’ about 6 pieces. I have to confess, its been after not properly brushing but I’m not convinced that’s the entire reason.  Part of it is surely natural attrition, the other is having it tangled, then brushing to get the tangles out.  Note to self: Sleeping with a scrunchy is good.

After 3 months there are some cons, but not enough to revert back to the old hair:

  • It tends to be dry.  Using KMS Repair takes care of it – but is a little heavy for my own hair. Strategic applications from the ears down help.
  • The underside takes more time to dry than I’d like so I end up flipping it upside down.  This causes ‘big hair’.  I’m a fan of big hair, but its a little wild.  I end up having to spend more time on it with a curling or flat iron.
  • My man can run his fingers through it – just not to far up.  And heaven forbid he should tug too hard! Not that it would come undone, but its a little nerve wracking.
  • On days 2 & 3 of not washing, the strands tend to separate and I need to keep it brushed so the glue tops don’t show.
  • I need to sleep with a scrunchy.

Like I said – really nothing I can’t live with.   Next up will be interviewing new stylists.  Its said that the extension usually last about 12 weeks.  Were there now, but I can’t imagine having them redone now.  One gal friend of mine went 8 months!  Troy of Troy Salon in Issaquah (And also a singer in one of my favorite local bands Half Pack Live) was thinking about getting into the extension biz.  I’ll chat with him to see if I can be his guinea pig, also with two others I’ve heard grand things about.

I blew it.  We had record breaking heat in Seattle this month.  I was pleased as punch to be able to wear my hair up for 4 straight days – not thinking about how I was suppose to brush it every morning and night.  I ended up with a couple of  dread-lock like clumps.  One on each side, one in the back.  As much as I brushed after – no difference.  And realizing if I didn’t go in my hair could break – I went, tail between my legs, confessing to the gals at Mermaid Hair Extensions.  Cindy laughed.  She said “We’ve all done it! Its not so bad!”.  They took out at least 20 pieces.  But – here’s the best news – They only insert in batches of about 40.  So I gained twice as much as I lost! NOTE: I went to my color hairdressers the day before and got a touch up down the middle.  She wouldn’t do the whole head until I take them out because its such a hassle to work around the extensions – especially when they’re fairly grown out.
